    Hi,

I think that it is super cool to be an expert in all SAP modules but unfortunately it is really difficult due to the vast scope of functions offered by SAP ERP. Usually, people specialize in certain areas that can cross several modules. For example, financial accounting + management accounting (FI + CO) or sales + procurements (SD + MM) or procurement + quality management (MM + QM).

Good functional consultants usually also know some ABAP. I doesn’t mean that they write code themselves but it helps them to create good functional specifications and efficiently communicate with ABAP developers.

As to you question about the choice between becoming super-specialized vs. generalist consultant, I think the answer depends on your career objectives. If you would like to become a project manager, then you probably don’t need specialized knowledge of a specific module but will rather benefit from general knowledge of all modules. On the other hand, if you would like to develop yourself in the direction of becoming an expert consultant, then you will probably need to focus on 1-3 modules that are closely related to each other (e.g., MM + QM + PP).

    I hope it helps!

You should prepare according to SAP HCM syllabus and test your knowledge with sample SAP HCM certification questions. I also have a selection of SAP HCM books. I hope it helps!

    Hi!

First of all, I assume that raw material and processed material (finished product) are different materials records in SAP.

If you have a processing weight loss for a particular raw material, then you need to specify it in BOM of the finished product. Open BOM of the finished product, find the raw material that has this weight loss, go to details and enter component scrap. 1mt from 20mt is 5%, so you need to enter 5%.

Next, when you create a subcontracting PO for the finished product, the system will automatically understand that for 20mt of finished product, it needs to send 21mt of raw material to the subcontractor.

Upon receipt of the finished product (20mt) from the subcontractor, the system will also automatically post goods issue of raw material (21mt) using 543 movement type.

You don’t need to use 551 movement type because the weight loss happens at the subcontractor’s site and you don’t need to keep track of it. All what is matters is that the subcontractor needs 21mt or raw material to produce 20mt of the finished product.

    I hope it helps!

Hi Joel! Honestly speaking, of course you are risking your career. You said that your concern is your academic background but I wouldn’t be too worried about it because there is such a specialization in SAP world as “SAP Trainer”. These are people who specialize in design and delivery of training programs to employees of companies that implemented SAP software. You can just go to some job board and search for the positions of SAP trainers to get an idea about requirements to be a qualified candidate for these jobs. I think that your background of an assistant professor and teaching skills might be beneficial for these roles. The difficult problem here is that you need to know SAP pretty well to be able to teach it to others.

Well, it is difficult to predict if the idea to make a career change and go to SAP area will be a good decision. I say so because SAP field is becoming increasingly competitive and you will need to contest with other candidates (who might already have experience in SAP area) for SAP jobs. If you decide to go for SAP, you will need to start at very junior positions, so you might lose in terms of money (comparing to your previous job).
If you know six sigma, I think you should look at PP (Production Planning), MM (Materials Management), and QM (Quality Management) modules.

The registration procedure is the same for different modules (finance or others). We wrote a post about it long ago: how to register for SAP certification.

    1. It depends on how easily you learn new things. If you are a quick learner and can grasp new concepts and knowledge almost immediately, then a free course is sufficient. However, I’d still recommend some practice in a real SAP ERP system.
    2. Usually people start with FI.
    3. You need to set clear goals and understand what you would like to achieve with SAP training. Next, make a realistic plan and start execution according to this plan. It is very important to have a plan and goals because otherwise you will get lost without a possibility to measure your progress.

    Did you mean VA41-VA45 transactions? Transaction VK41 doesn’t exist…

In the standard SAP, you cannot enter multiple ship-to parties in a single contract. The system only allows one ship-to party at the header level of the contract.

However, you can use a workaround suggested in SAP Knowledge Base: define as many different partner functions for ship-to parties as required and attach each of them to your partner determination procedure (e.g. ZA partner function for ship-to party A, ZB partner function for ship-to party B and so on).

    I hope it helps!
